As the remaining stocks of
MX1000's are getting lower and the costs are becoming higher I
figured that reconditioning old calipers and levers would be
more cost effective than looking for a set in the 'elusive'
colour. The question is to paint or powder coat? I know
powder coat can be quite thick but is paint too fragile for
brakes? Anyone done this

I had my mx1000 powdercoated
and it was a DISASTER.It was so thick it practically
obliterated the mx indentation.i will NEVER get anything
powdercoated again. However lots of people swear by it...i
swear AT it. Spray them and laquer them, thats how they
were done originally. You dont even have to strip the old paint
off first.

I powder coated a set into
gold superchrome and i gotta say they looked the dogs when
finished!!
If its done right you'll have no bother
with power coating. | |

I think he was referring to
not having to strip the original paint. I presume you just
sand it to get a slightly textured surface prior to painting.

I know what you mean,you
usually need a key for the new paint. The black paint was
all still there tho under the pink,no signs of sanding.
What was wierd was that the pink paint was perfect,no
chips, etc which is what you'd expect from non-keyed
paint. | |

Top tip - white Humbrol enamel, a thin
brush, and a bottle of enamel thinners. Paint in the infills
and don't worry about doing it too well. Leave for a few
hours, then use a rag soaked in thinners to remove any bits
where you've messed up. The other method is to lay on
several coats of your base colour, a quick dusting of the
infill colour and then flat it back. The infills will be
filled with your desired colour! | |
